CHRC’s Department of Orthopaedics is one of the first dedicated orthopaedic centres in Central India. The Department of Orthopaedics offers many specialized services and procedures and is renowned across Central India.
The department has a state of the art Arthroplasty OR equipped with laminar airflow and body exhaust suits which reduce the risk of infections. All primary and revision joint replacements and resurfacing, including complex cases involving hip, knee, shoulder, and elbow are performed here. Annually over 400 arthroplasties are performed in the JRS (Joint replacement and Spine) Operation Theatre Complex which includes around 100 revision surgeries.
The department is involved in treating all levels of spinal surgery ranging from routine lumbar degenerative disc disease to complex cervical spine and craniovertebral anomalies. Annually, over 500 spinal surgical procedures are performed in the JRS (Joint replacement and Spine) Operation Theatre Complex.
The department is involved in treating a wide variety of sports-related injuries ranging from acute ligament/tendon tears to chronic overuse injuries.
The CHRC hospital has comprehensive trauma services available through emergency medical services. A large number of primary and neglected extremities, pelvic and spinal trauma is treated in the emergency center. Trauma is also operated in a planned manner in the routine theatres. We are equipped with an image intensifier and good technical and instrumentation support in all the operating rooms. Plastic surgery and vascular surgery departments provide excellent supportive care for the severely injured limb where limb salvage may be necessary. A vascular intervention and angioembolisation facility is also available within the hospital premises
The department has been at the forefront for many years in using the Ilizarov technique for limb reconstruction. Specialized services offered include management of infected non-unions, limb lengthening, complex deformity correction, management of bone defects resulting from trauma or tumour resection. Some of the pioneering work from the department has been in the field of non-unions, tumour reconstruction, deformity correction, amputation stump lengthening, and limb lengthening in short stature dwarfism.
The department treats over 200 cases of orthopaedic neoplasms annually. These include both benign and malignant bone tumours. All types of limb salvage surgery and tumour reconstructive surgery including resection Arthroplasty are performed. Patients requiring chemotherapy and radiotherapy are referred to Cancer Wing which is on the same campus.
